What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy (or talk therapy) is a treatment that can help patients identify, understand, and alleviate a variety of mental and emotional issues. While the silver screen usually paints therapy as a one-way conversation, psychotherapy relies on an active and open conversation between patient and therapist.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy

A subtype of psychotherapy, psychodynamic therapy is an approach that considers a great deal of what we do lies outside of our awareness. It maintains the idea that previous experiences, whether within our families of origin or the wider socio-cultural context, directly impact how we move about the world.

Research shows that psychodynamic therapy has longer-lasting effects than other behavioral and cognitive treatments. This is in part due to the exploratory nature of this therapy: it’s not about behavioral techniques to reduce symptoms. It’s about the reasons behind the symptoms.

Who can benefit from psychodynamic psychotherapy?

Many people choose psychodynamic treatment because their coping skills no longer work to calm emotional upheavals. Psychodynamic psychotherapy has been shown to help individuals cope with depression, anxiety, eating, personality disorders, and more.
